FERNS FOR SHADE AND DAMP

Pneumatopteris pennigera Pakau, Gully Fern
Slowly grows a slender trunk to 1m. Attractive leaf.

Blechnum fluviatile Kiwakiwa Creek Fern  
Rich soil, well drained. Very attractive form. One of our favourites.

Blechnum chambersii Rereti Lance Water Fern
Attractive with plenty of water.

Asplenium bulbiferum Mouku
Hen and Chickens Fern
Rich soil, well drained. Suits indoors or outdoors.   
Beware of slugs and snails.

Diplazium australe Lady Fern
Rich soil, well drained. Can grow to 1.5m.

Histiopteris incisa Mata Water Fern
Rich soil, well drained. Height to about 1m.

Lastreopsis hispida Tuakura Hairy Fern
Likes deep shade. Attractive finely divided leaf.

Ground dwellers

Pteris macilenta Titipo Sweet Brake

Good soil, well drained. Fronds to approx 0.7m. 
Attractive leaves.

Adiantum cunninghamii Puhinui
Maidenhair Fern
Quite hardy but fairly slow to establish.
Makes clumps as it spreads.

Adiantum hispidulum Rosy Maidenhair
Young fronds reddish. Slightly frost tender. Suits indoors or outdoors.

Lastreopsis microsora Smooth Stem
Hardy and attractive. Likes shade. 
Height to approx   0.9m

Blechnum discolor Piupiu Crown Fern
Likes rich soil, well drained. Attractive ring of pale green new leaves.

Asplenium oblongifolium Huruhuruwhenua
Shining Spleenwort
Needs moisture, some shade, rich soil, well drained.
Beware of slugs and snails. Attractive.

Asplenium polyodon Petako Sickle Spleenwort
Needs moisture, some shade, rich soil, well drained.

Climbers

Phymatosorus diversifolius Kowaowao
Hound's Tongue Fern
Attractive climbing fern with thick rhizome and large leaves. Tolerates dryness when established, but not much sun. Leaf length to approx 0.3m.

Phymatosorus scandens Mokimoki
Fragrant Fern
Scrambling or climbing fern. Attractive bunched mature leaves, young leaves undivided.

Blechnum filiforme Panako Thread Fern
Ground fronds different to climbing fronds. Good ground cover, likes shelter.

Pyrrosia eleagnifolia Ngarara Wehi
Leather Leaf Fern
Scrambling or climbing fern. Grows well on rocks, walls, or tree trunks.

  
FERNS THAT TOLERATE SUN

Doodia media Pukupuku
Rasp Fern
Fronds rosy-pink when young. Makes attractive base for a bank or fence. Height to 0.5m.

Blechnum sp Kiokio
Palm Leaf Fern
Grow on bank for hanging effect. Young fronds pinkish. Mature fronds 1m or more.

Pteris tremula Turawera Shaking Brake
Tolerates full sun or shade. Hardy.
Fronds to approx 1m.

Paesia scaberula Matata Lace Fern
Hardy, grows in shade or full sun. 
Attractive ground cover. Height approx 0.6m.

Polystichum richardii Pikopiko
Shield Fern
Hardy. Not particular about shade or soil.
Thick leaves, length to about 0.6m.

TREE FERNS

Our tree ferns are young spore grown plants.

Cyathea medullaris Mamaku
Black Tree Fern
Needs water in dry weather plus shelter from wind 
  and frost. Fast growing. Can grow up to 20m tall.

Dicksonia squarrosa Wheki
Rough Tree Fern
Hardy, tolerates sun and some wind.
Can grow up to 7m tall.

Cyathea dealbata Ponga Silver Tree Fern
Can grow up to 10m tall.
